Brain fruit

I discovered this amazing fruit today. I have no idea what it is called and it looks disgusting but man does it taste good! I would describe the flavor as similar to apple pie filling, bit a bit more tart. Too bad it has many seeds. It males it a challenge to use in cooking. I have named it brain fruit because the shell is hard like a skull and the fruit inside looks eerily similar to a human brain. If you know the name I would love to know.

    Hi Mark
So, another botanical challenge..hmmm…a bit of googling and I think it might be the spiny monkey orange [Strychnos spinosa] aka Green Monkey Orange (English) Doringklapper (Afrikaans) Morapa (NS) umKwakwa (Swaziland) Nsala (Tswana) Mutamba (Shona) Maboque (Angola) Eguni (sing)/Maguni (pl) (Namibia) iHlala (isiZulu) Massala (Mozambique Portuguese)

Really enjoying the pictures and glimpses into life there.

I found something that looks similar, and I think tastes like sour candy. I’m told it’s called “mateme” in Chichewa, I wonder if it’s the same thing?
